Miss Rebekah Visits the Netherlands

Is this country called "the" Netherlands?  Netherlands?  Holland?
Well, the answer is a little complex.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands is made up of four constituent states:  the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

Miss Rebekah read the book Netherlands, and you can put it on hold here This book is about the part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands located in Europe.  It is the biggest of the four states that make up the Kingdom.  While the title of the book is Netherlands, the book is wrong! If you watch the show, you will also know that Miss Ing gets really mad that the series is called Countries We Come From when it SHOULD be called Countries from Which We Come, but that is neither here nor there.

This book's title should be the Netherlands because, in English, one must always use "the" in front of Netherlands.  We don't know why. That is just the way it is!

The part of the Netherlands featured in today's program is also sometimes known as Holland.  If you are confused, that is okay!  Our country can be confusing to people, too!  But if you want to learn more about the names, you can find more information here!

People from the Netherlands are known as the Dutch.  The Netherlands is one of the happiest countries in the world according to the World Happiness Index.   The country has a long history of social inclusion.

Many famous painters have come from the Netherlands including Vincent van Gogh.  Miss Rebekah read this book about one of his popular painting topics, sunflowers.  If you want to read the book, you can request it here.
